Shepton Mallet’s giant scarf wraps town in support of vital mental health services

A striking burst of colour has appeared in Shepton Mallet's town centre — and it's all in aid of a cause that's becoming more urgent by the day.
Locals have come together to stitch, crochet and craft a giant scarf that now wraps around the historic Market Cross, raising awareness and funds for SWEDA, the Somerset and Wessex Eating Disorders Association.
The project is part of The Great Make, a campaign launched by SWEDA to shine a light on eating disorders — one of the most underfunded and misunderstood areas of mental health. The scarf, made up of hundreds of handmade pieces, includes contributions from local community groups and individuals, including Shepton's weekly 'Crochet & Chat' group.
The final wraparound event saw town councillors help dress the monument in its new woolly outfit, in a public show of support for the cause.
The campaign began earlier this year with a fundraising day at the Art Bank, featuring music, crochet workshops and creative sessions led by local yarn expert Nicky Jerrome from All About The Yarn in Chesterblade Hills.
With eating disorder referrals rising and services under strain, SWEDA is encouraging people across the South West to get involved in The Great Make over the summer — whether through knitting, painting, writing or crafting — to help fund its frontline services, including support for children and young people.
