Shepton Mallet residents are being urged to take a stand against speeding by joining a police‑backed crackdown on dangerous drivers.
Community SpeedWatch – a volunteer scheme run with Avon and Somerset Police – trains locals to monitor vehicle speeds in 20, 30 and 40 mph zones using official kit to help reduce collisions on town roads.
Offenders caught by the scheme are sent warning letters, but repeat or extreme speeders can be flagged to police for further action.
The force says speeding remains one of the top local safety concerns and has called on more people in Shepton to get involved to make streets safer.
Volunteers carry out roadside speed checks using detection devices. Data is passed to police, who issue advisory letters aimed at changing driver behaviour.
Persistent speeders or high‑risk offenders may face fines, prosecution, or further police action.
Neighbourhood officers say the scheme works best when backed by local people who know the problem areas first‑hand.
