Shepton Mallet lights up for a packed night of carnival colour

By Laura Linham   13th Nov 2025

Shepton Mallet's carnival parade was brought to an abrupt halt last night after a participant fell from a cart, stopping the procession for almost an hour as emergency services responded.

The high street had been packed with spectators as the illuminated carts began making their way through the town. Just after 8.40pm, the lead cart came to a sudden stop on Charlton Road, with stewards signalling for space and music cutting out mid-performance.

Police on motorbikes were seen heading up the route, and members of the public were asked to move back to allow an ambulance through.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers at Shepton Mallet Carnival dealth with a road-related incident at around 8.40pm, we were made aware that a carnival participant had fallen from one of the carnival carts.

"The individual was provided first aid by officers and members of St John's Ambulance before being taken to hospital. At this time, their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life changing.

"The procession was temporarily held while care was provided and was resumed at around 9.30pm.

"We would like to thank members of the public and carnival participants for their patience and understanding."

Once the parade restarted, the line of illuminated carts continued its way through the town, drawing applause from the crowds who had waited along the route.

Jade Young, who had travelled from Glastonbury to watch the carnival with her family, said: "This year's carts are just brilliant, and it's clear a lot of effort has gone into them. It's lovely to see the town come together like this – it really brings out the community spirit."

If you missed Shepton Mallet's parade, the route moves on to Wells on Friday night before the final procession of the season in Glastonbury on Saturday.
