Shepton Mallet firefighters put fitness to the test
By Laura Linham 8th Jun 2026
Shepton Mallet firefighters swapped the usual Monday night drill for something with rather less room for hiding at the back.
Crews at Shepton Mallet Fire Station completed their annual fitness test this week, as part of the health and welfare checks required by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
All operational personnel in the service are required to pass the test every year for their safety and to remain operational.
Assessments can include the bleep test, also known as the shuttle run, treadmill tests, or the fireground fitness test.
Similar checks are also carried out during the application process for people hoping to become paid on-call firefighters.
Shepton Mallet Fire Station is currently recruiting on-call firefighters.
On-call crews respond from home or work when alerted, helping provide emergency cover for their local area.
The station is encouraging people interested in joining to find out more through Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service's on-call recruitment information.
