Firefighters from Shepton Mallet were among four crews who tackled a large barn fire in Stoney Stratton this morning (September 12).

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Control received a call just after 4.15am reporting what appeared to be a barn on fire in Westcombe Road, Stoney Stratton.

Two fire engines from Shepton Mallet Fire Station along with a water carrier from Yeovil Fire Station were mobilised immediately.

Once the first crews arrived on the scene they requested a further fire engine which was mobilised from Castle Cary Fire Station.

Crews confirmed this was a barn fully on fire. Within the barn there was approximately 120 tonnes of hay and agricultural machinery.

The owner of the barn was in attendance and assisted fire crews with a telehandler to remove hay from the barn.

Crews remained on scene all morning damping down hot spots and ensuring that the hay which had been dragged out was full extinguished.

The cause of the fire is confirmed as accidental.
