Shepton Mallet crimes rarely reached court, data shows

Of the 2,934 crimes recorded in Shepton Mallet between April 2023 and December 2025, only 119 showed any court-related outcome, according to police data. The figures point to a stark pattern, with only a small fraction of recorded offences showing a route to court in the public outcomes data.
The outcome breakdown shows 29 cases were listed as awaiting a court outcome, while 88 were marked as court result unavailable. A further two were recorded as a suspect charged as part of another case.
By far the biggest single category was status update unavailable, which accounted for 1,138 cases, or 36.9 per cent. Another 1,016 offences, or 32.9 per cent, were recorded as unable to prosecute suspect.
Just 42 cases, or 1.4 per cent, were logged as a local resolution, while 21 resulted in a caution. Another 137 were marked as investigation complete with no suspect identified, and 73 were still under investigation.
The wider quarterly figures show crime levels in Shepton Mallet rising and falling over the same period rather than moving in one direction. The total stood at 263 offences in April to June 2023, peaked at 335 in April to June 2025, and was 267 in October to December 2025.
