Reported crime in Shepton Mallet rose in July after falling to its lowest level for several months in June, according to the latest police figures.

A total of 93 crimes were recorded in the Shepton Mallet Town policing area during July 2026, up from 80 in June — an increase of 13 reports, or just over 16 per cent.

The July figure remains below several recent monthly totals. Police recorded 100 crimes in March, 97 in April and 102 in October 2025, the highest figure across the latest 12-month period.

The largest category in July was violence and sexual offences, accounting for 41 of the 93 reports, or 44 per cent of the total.

It is a broad police category covering a wide range of offending, from assaults and threats involving violence through to sexual offences. The figures do not show the circumstances or seriousness of individual incidents, so they should not be read as meaning all 41 reports involved serious physical injury.

Anti-social behaviour was the second-largest category, with 20 incidents recorded during July.

That category can include behaviour such as nuisance, intimidation, disorder and other incidents which cause harassment, alarm or distress. The town's neighbourhood policing team currently lists anti-social behaviour among its local priorities.

There were seven burglaries during the month. Burglary broadly involves entering a home or other premises as a trespasser with the intention of stealing or committing certain other offences.

Police also recorded seven shoplifting offences, covering theft from shops and retail premises.

There were four robberies and four other thefts. Robbery differs from ordinary theft because it involves the use or threat of force, while "other theft" covers offences which do not fit more specific categories such as shoplifting, bicycle theft or theft from a person.

Criminal damage and arson accounted for three reports. That category can range from deliberate damage to buildings, vehicles and other property through to deliberately setting property alight.

A further three public order offences were recorded, covering offences which can include threatening or abusive behaviour and disorder.

There were also two thefts from the person, where property is taken directly from somebody without the force or threat involved in robbery, and two vehicle crimes, which can include theft of a vehicle, attempted vehicle theft or theft from a vehicle.

When the July figures were published, 29 of the 93 crimes were still under investigation.

A further 25 were recorded as cases where police were unable to prosecute a suspect, while 18 investigations had been completed without a suspect being identified.

One case had been referred for action by another organisation, while 20 were listed under the police.uk "other" outcome category.

Looking across the previous 12 months, Shepton Mallet recorded 94 crimes in August 2025, 93 in September, 102 in October, 88 in November and 77 in December.

The monthly totals for 2026 were 88 in January, 73 in February, 100 in March, 97 in April, 90 in May, 80 in June and 93 in July.

The figures relate to crimes and incidents recorded within the Shepton Mallet Town neighbourhood policing area. They do not represent the number of people charged, prosecuted or convicted, and the police categories can include incidents of widely differing circumstances and seriousness.
