Crime reports in Shepton Mallet fell in April, according to the latest police figures.

A total of 123 crimes were recorded in the town during April 2026, down from 138 in March 2026. Violent crime remained the largest category in both months, with 64 reports in April and 67 in March.

The violent crime category can include a wide range of offences, from harassment and common assault to more serious assaults. The figures show recorded crimes only, meaning they reflect incidents logged by police rather than the final outcome of any investigation.

Anti-social behaviour was the second highest category in April, with 16 reports, up slightly from 15 in March. Anti-social behaviour covers incidents where someone's conduct causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to others.

Shoplifting also rose, from eight reports in March to 11 in April. Shoplifting refers to theft from shops and retail premises, while other theft, which rose from four to six reports, is a broader category for thefts that do not sit under more specific headings such as shoplifting, burglary or vehicle crime.

Public order offences fell from 16 in March to eight in April. These can include behaviour linked to disorder, threatening conduct or incidents affecting public peace.

Criminal damage and arson remained unchanged, with eight reports in both March and April. This category covers property being deliberately damaged or destroyed, including damage to homes, vehicles or other buildings.

Drug offences rose from two reports in March to three in April. This category covers offences involving possession, supply, consumption or intent to supply illegal drugs.

Burglary remained unchanged, with two reports in both March and April. Burglary covers theft, or attempted theft, from a building where entry has not been authorised.

Robbery rose from one report in March to two in April. Robbery means theft involving force, or the threat of force.

Possession of weapons fell from four reports in March to one in April, while vehicle crime also dropped, from five reports in March to one in April. Vehicle crime can include theft from a vehicle, theft of a vehicle, or interference with a vehicle.

Other crime fell from six reports in March to one in April. This is used for offences that do not fit neatly into the other listed categories.

Avon and Somerset Police says it uploads crime data to the Home Office each month, which is then used to present local crime statistics through the national Police.uk website.
