Shepton Mallet has recorded more than 2,000 crimes since 2022 with no clear result, official figures show.
From October 2022 to August 2025, 1,088 cases were logged as "status update unavailable", while 873 cases were marked "unable to prosecute suspect".
That means nearly two-thirds of all recorded offences ended with no prosecution, caution or court outcome.
Just 49 cases led to formal action
In the same period:
- Only 26 offenders were given a caution
- Just 23 cases reached court
- 51 cases were dealt with through local resolution
- 220 remain under investigation
The rest were written off as "not in the public interest" or passed to other organisations.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Many cases cannot go forward due to lack of evidence or victim cooperation — but we always aim to support victims and take action where we can."
