Shepton Mallet was awash with lights and laughter last night as the town's annual carnival parade drew crowds to the high street, marking one of Somerset's most eagerly awaited events.

Carnival clubs from across the county joined local groups to create a dazzling procession of illuminated floats, music, and elaborate costumes.

The parade was led by the high-energy performances of local majorette troupes and dance groups, which set the tone for a night of entertainment and spectacle.

From fantastical fairy tales to iconic pop culture scenes, the floats delivered a visual treat, with some designs towering several metres high, adorned with twinkling lights and detailed decor.

One spectator said: "This year's floats [carts] are just brilliant, and it's clear a lot of effort has gone into them. It's lovely to see the town come together like this – it really brings out the community spirit."

The event drew families and carnival enthusiasts from across the region, with younger spectators especially captivated by the lively displays and interactive performers who waved and danced to the crowd.

Proceeds from the night will go towards local charities and community initiatives, an important aspect of Somerset's carnival tradition. With Shepton Mallet's carnival season now officially in full swing, locals are already looking forward to next year's display, hoping it will continue to capture the spirit of the town and its love for the carnival.

Miss this year's event? The carts are in Wells on Friday night, and the last carnival of the season takes place in Glastonbury on Saturday.
