Revving, drifting and racing: police crack down on Shepton Mallet car meets

Late-night drivers using town centre car wash as racing spot spark police patrols and community concern
Police in Shepton Mallet have launched a crackdown on anti-social drivers using a local car wash and roundabout as a late-night racetrack.
Officers say they've been flooded with reports of revving engines, drifting, and dangerous driving near the car wash and surrounding area – with groups gathering to race and show off in the streets.
The issue was officially flagged on 4 June, and police say they're now stepping up patrols to get a grip on the situation before someone gets hurt.
A spokesperson for the force said: "We've had a number of calls about cars gathering in the car wash area. Drivers have been revving engines, drifting around the roundabout and racing in the area. We'll be tackling this proactively and carrying out regular patrols."
Residents have also raised concerns about the noise and potential safety risks, with some calling for more visible enforcement and cameras.
Police are asking anyone with information to report it via 101 or the Avon and Somerset Police website.
The message is clear: if you're tearing up Shepton's streets at night — expect a visit.
