Pub near Shepton named one of the UK’s best gastropubs
A Somerset pub near Shepton Mallet has been named one of the best gastropubs in the UK, ranking seventh in the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs list.
The Three Horseshoes in Batcombe, just outside Shepton Mallet, has gained national recognition for its simple yet high-quality approach to food, using local Somerset produce.
The 17th-century inn, which reopened in 2023 under renowned chef Margot Henderson, has been praised by critics and was also recognised by the Michelin Guide.
Henderson, best known for her work at Rochelle Canteen in London, has brought her signature style to Somerset, focusing on classic dishes that let ingredients "speak for themselves."
She shares responsibility for the pub with Nye Smith, formerly of Six Portland Road, who leads the day-to-day running of the kitchen.
Located in the heart of the countryside, The Three Horseshoes offers a bar stocked with real ales, craft beer, and local ciders, a restaurant with a focus on seasonal ingredients, and five guest bedrooms.
There is also a private dining room with views over the garden, which can seat up to 26 guests.
The pub's food has impressed leading critics, with MasterChef judge William Sitwell describing the menu in The Telegraph as taking "your nightmare of school food and elevating it to dreamlike status."
The Three Horseshoes was one of the highest-ranked pubs outside London, placing alongside well-known names such as The Sportsman in Kent and The Mariners in Cornwall. The top spot this year was awarded to The Unruly Pig in Suffolk.
The Three Horseshoes is located in Batcombe, just a short drive from Shepton Mallet, at BA4 6HE.
