As parents and guardians, the safety of our children is paramount. In Shepton Mallet, like the rest of the UK, residents have the right to ask the police for information related to convicted sex offenders in their area.

What is Sarah's Law?

Known formally as the child sex offender disclosure scheme in England and Wales, Sarah's Law allows anyone to ask the police if someone with access to a child has a record for child sexual offences. The police will reveal this information confidentially to the person most able to protect the child, such as parents, carers, or guardians, if they believe it is in the child's best interests.

The law came into existence following the campaigning efforts of Sarah Payne, whose eight-year-old daughter was abducted and murdered by a convicted paedophile. The scheme aims to give parents the ability to know if dangerous offenders are living in their communities.

Who is on the Sex Offenders' Register?

It is important to note that the term 'sex offender' does not automatically mean 'paedophile'. A range of individuals may be placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for different lengths of time, depending on the nature and severity of their offence. For example, the register may include someone who received a caution for inappropriate behaviour, as well as someone who has been convicted of a more severe offence like child abduction.

How to Access Information

If you believe a child is in immediate danger, call 999 without hesitation. For non-emergency situations, you can call 101 or visit your local police station. You can also request a 'Child Sex Offenders Disclosure Scheme Form' (Sarah's Law), or Form 284. If the individual in question has a record that puts a child at risk, the police will consider sharing this information, although disclosure is not guaranteed.
