Police in Shepton Mallet have issued a warning to parents and carers after a surge in complaints about dangerous and inconsiderate parking around local schools — with officers now stepping up patrols during peak times.

The message is clear: blocking pavements and parking dangerously during the school run puts lives at risk, and it won't be tolerated.

Officers say they are still getting regular calls about problem parking at drop-off and pick-up times, particularly vehicles obstructing pavements and school entrances.

"Parking on a pavement is not only illegal, it forces others — including children and parents with buggies — into the road and puts them at risk of being hit by passing traffic," a spokesperson said.

While police acknowledged the difficulties of parking near schools at busy times, they stressed that safety comes first — and urged drivers to plan ahead and park legally, even if it means a short walk.

Patrols are already under way, and neighbourhood officers say more targeted visits will follow if reports continue.

"Parking around schools at drop-off and pick-up time continues to be a problem," the Shepton beat team said. "We'll be continuing proactive patrols at local schools to help keep children safe around the roads."

Parents and residents who witness unsafe or illegal parking are encouraged to report it via 101 or online, to help police direct their patrols where they're needed most.

The message from the local team is simple: plan ahead, park safely, and don't make the school run more dangerous than it needs to be.
