A council spokesperson said: "Like other town and parish councils across England, Shepton Mallet's councillors come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some may stand under a party label, while others are entirely independent, but once elected they work together as individuals.

"None of them are required to have political allegiance, and you don't have to have an interest in national politics at to be apart of the Town Council. What they share is a commitment to making Shepton Mallet a better place to live, work, and visit.

"From fixing footpaths to funding events, the real work is hyperlocal. And while some councillors may bring party experience, it's not a requirement. Most town and parish councillors in England are independents — serving their neighbours, not a national agenda."
