A singer, who stormed the charts in the mid-1990s, is dusting off her microphone once more for a special bank holiday music weekend near Shepton Mallet.

Ruth-Ann Boyle, the former lead singer of the Ivor Novello Award winning dance band Olive, will join a host of local talent at The Lion in West Pennard at the end of this month.

Among a set of covers, Ruth-Ann will perform her 1997 number 1 smash hit 'You're Not Alone' on Saturday, August 27.

The 15th century bar, restaurant and hotel is hosting a two-day live music weekend on the 27th and 28th to mark the August bank holiday.

On Saturday, August 27, among those performing will be local musicians Jess Stockman, Olivia Kerton and Alex Priddice, who just a few weeks ago performed at the Glastonbury Festival. On Sunday, August 28, the performers will include Jess Stockman, Shalana Serafina and Scarlett Stone Jazz Quartet.

The Lion's owner, Barrie Wilson, said: "This is set to be a brilliant weekend of some of the best local talent mid-Somerset has to offer. We have a fab line-up to look forward to, and it is pure fluke that we've managed to bag Ruth-Ann Boyle, whose brother is a regular at The Lion. Ruth-Ann has also become a familiar face whenever she visits.

"The music kicks off at 12pm each day for a few hours, and while it's not going to be a big festival or rock concert, it will be two great afternoons of chilled live background music with some outdoor food and drink available – providing the weather plays ball."

Tickets or reservations are not required, but anyone attending is recommended to arrive early to grab a seat. Space and parking will be limited, so please share lifts if you can.
