New archway to mark gateway to Collett Park and the Strawberry Line

Construction is now underway on a new archway that will mark the entrance to Collett Park and the future route of the Strawberry Line off Cannards Grave Road.
Local firm Dave Addicott Engineering Co has started work on the foundations this week, which will see two railway wheels sunk into the ground as part of the base. The structure is designed to provide a more attractive and meaningful gateway to the park and cycle path while acknowledging Shepton's historic railway links.
The 3-metre arch is being manufactured locally using CorTen steel – a modern metal that weathers over time into a rich reddish-brown colour, developing a protective rust layer that gives it a distinctive finish.
Once complete, the new arch will celebrate the legacy of the Strawberry Line, which once carried West Country produce to London and the South East. It will also serve as a permanent marker for the start of the planned off-road multi-user path that will eventually stretch all the way to Clevedon on the Severn Estuary, passing through Wells and Cheddar.
The project's first stage focuses on establishing a strong, bespoke foundation, with work continuing through the week.
Shepton Mallet Town Council and local campaigners have long supported efforts to link the town into the wider Strawberry Line route, which is expected to boost active travel, tourism and access to green space in the years ahead.
