E-scooters could be seized as police crack down in Shepton Mallet town centre

Police in Shepton Mallet have issued a fresh warning over the illegal use of e-scooters, as sightings across the town centre continue to rise.
Neighbourhood officers say they've seen a noticeable increase in privately owned e-scooters being used in public places — despite clear laws banning their use on UK roads, pavements and cycle lanes.
Under current legislation, it is illegal to ride an e-scooter or any other powered transporter on public highways.
Privately owned scooters can only be used on private land, and only with the landowner's permission.
Police say anyone caught flouting the rules could have their scooter seized and destroyed, and face prosecution for driving without insurance.
"E-scooters continue to be a problem in and around Shepton Mallet town centre," officers said in a statement issued this week. "Continued foot patrols will take place in the town centre and open spaces to tackle the issue."
Officers say patrols will remain in place to monitor the situation and enforce the law where necessary.
