A bubble of children at the Mendip School, near Shepton Mallet, will be learning from home after a member of the school community tested positive for coronavirus.
The school has confirmed the positive Covid-19 test and said that, with a "heavy heart", the school will be closed to a bubble of children.
Emily Massey, CEO of the Bath and Mendip Partnership Trust who run the special school in Prestleigh, said: "We have had to take the sad step of closing our school to a bubble of children today, as a member of our community has tested positive for Covid-19.
"Given the school's extensive preparation, and how much the children have all enjoyed being back, it is with a heavy heart we have had to take this step.
"However, it is right that we follow all the guidelines that have been set, and the health and safety of our school community has to be our priority.
"Those children that are away from school will be provided with home learning and the school is working closely with Public Health England, supported by Somerset County Council, following the advice that they are providing us with in relation to closure and cleaning of the site."
