A recent video that has roused the attention of Shepton locals, an online urban explorer by the moniker Mr Turdtowns delivered a scathing critique of the town.

"Don't bother coming down here, it just feels eerie," Mr Turdtowns advises his viewers, pinpointing the aftereffects of Shepton's high street after the development of a large Tesco store on its periphery. His review goes on to describe Shepton as "scruffy" and suggests that the town hasn't "held any importance since the prison, or before that, the railway station closed."

His observations extend to the residential areas, where he remarks, "Almost all of the houses here are in need of a good clean and a lick of paint." Mr Turdtowns doesn't shy away from extending his critique to the townsfolk, quipping, "Whilst you're spraying down the houses, feel free to spray the people down too."

Residents have responded with a mixture of agreement and defence. One YouTube commenter reflects on the town's former vibrancy, "The high street used to be such a hub for the village." Yet another local, while acknowledging some of the area's shortcomings, feels "Shepton is a reasonable place with mostly friendly people."

Despite the pointed words of the video, Shepton's community spirit shines through in residents' reactions, with many highlighting the warmth and camaraderie that remain at the town's core.

On our Facebook page, Christine Jones, a resident for over 34 years, encapsulates the sentiment of many: "I love living in Shepton; it's a genuine community of lovely, caring people. I wouldn't live anywhere else."
