The Shepton Mallet Gymnastics Club faces uncertainty following the sudden announcement of the Shepton Mallet Prison closure.

The closure, announced by Cove Group, the prison's operator, follows a breakdown in relations with City & Country, the owner of the building. The prison is expected to remain open to visitors until its closing date in January 2024.

The prison has been the longstanding venue for the club, hosting numerous gymnastics activities for the community.

Known for more than just gymnastics lessons, the club serves as a vital community space. It offers a supportive environment where around 220 children weekly engage in physical activity, develop social skills, and find camaraderie. The club is especially significant for children and teenagers seeking a safe and nurturing place to grow and connect.

For the club's coordinator, Clare Tanner, and its members, the club's potential closure is more than just the loss of a sports facility; it represents a disruption to a community gathering point that has been integral to many local families.

In light of these developments, the club is actively seeking a new premises to continue its operations and maintain its role in the community. The search is on for a suitable space that can accommodate the diverse range of activities and participants the club supports.

The Shepton Mallet community and the gymnastics club are appealing for assistance in finding a new location. Anyone with information or resources that could help secure a new venue is encouraged to contact the club at [email protected].
