Shepton rural thefts rise as police urge vigilance
By Laura Linham 2nd Jul 2026
Police are urging residents around Shepton Mallet to stay alert after an increase in rural theft reports.
Mendip Neighbourhood Policing said machinery, tools and fuel are among the items being targeted in rural communities. Officers said the offences can have a significant impact on people living and working in the countryside.
The rural crime priority was agreed on Sunday, 7 June, and updated on Tuesday, 30 June. Police said they are carrying out targeted patrols in the area in response to the increase.
Residents are being asked to secure vehicles, machinery and outbuildings, and to remove keys and valuables when they are not in use. Police are also encouraging people to install lighting, CCTV or alarms where possible.
Officers said marking equipment visibly, recording serial numbers and taking photos of valuable items can help if property is stolen. Rural residents are also being encouraged to join local rural watch groups where available.
Mendip Neighbourhood Policing said: "We are seeing an increase in rural thefts across the area.
"Please remain vigilant, secure vehicles, machinery and outbuildings, and report any suspicious activity."
Police said reports from the public help officers target patrols more effectively. Anyone who sees suspicious activity should report it immediately, especially if a crime appears to be in progress.
Residents should call 999 in an emergency or if a crime is happening. Non-emergency information can be reported by calling 101 or online through the local police website.
Officers added: "Your help makes a difference — please report any incidents or suspicious activity. This allows us to focus our patrols and keep our communities safe."
