In the by-election held on 2 May for the Mendip South division of Somerset Council, Liberal Democrat candidate Rob Reed emerged victorious, securing a seat with 1,313 votes.

Reed gathered 1,313 votes, edging out Conservative candidate Ken Maddock, who received 1,122 votes.

The Mendip South division includes the Glastonbury Festival site, Evercreech, Baltonsborough, Butleigh, Ditcheat, Pilton, and West Pennard.

This area, adjacent to the large village of Street and market towns like Bruton, Castle Cary, Glastonbury, and Shepton Mallet, has historically leaned Conservative but swung to the Liberal Democrats in 2022—a trend that continued in this election.

The by-election also saw participation from the Green Party and Labour, with Michael Smyth and David Oakensen securing 200 and 139 votes respectively. Voter turnout was recorded at 36.07%, with 14 ballots rejected.
