A popular discount supermarket wants to come to Shepton Mallet - and it needs your help to find the perfect location.

Lidl, the German discount supermarket chain, has announced that they are eyeing up Shepton Mallet for a new site as part of a huge nationwide expansion plan.

With 950 stores already across the country, Lidl aims to increase this figure to 1,100 by the end of 2025. As part of this huge expansion, the company has released a list of 1,168 locations where it wants to open new stores, with Shepton on the list as a potential site.

They are offering a finder's fee to members of the public who can help find suitable sites for new stores. A fee of 1.5% of the total freehold purchase price or 10% of the first year's rent for leaseholds offered will be paid to individuals who are able to provide useful leads.

So if you can help them find a location that meets their requirements, you could land yourself a little cash bonus.

They are on the look-out for:

  • Prominent locations with easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow.
  • Freehold, leasehold or long leasehold opportunities.
  • Unit sizes between 18,000 and 26,500 sq. ft and 100+ dedicated car parking spaces.
  • 1.5+ acres for standalone stores or up to 4 acres for mixed-use schemes.
  • Town centre or edge of centre and retail parks.

Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB Chief Executive, said: "The last few years have been challenging for everyone, but we've made it clear that we're more committed than ever to ensuring that every single household has access to a Lidl store. That's why our focus is firmly on the future as we continue to grow and invest in our infrastructure, while keeping a lookout for more sites and locations across the country."

Lidl GB Chief Development Officer, Richard Taylor, added: "Our store expansion has been and continues to be unparalleled. In the last three months alone, we've opened 15 new stores – more than any other retailer, and in 2022 we welcomed customers through the doors of over 50 new stores. But we won't be stopping there. Our vision is to have over 1,100 stores in the future, but really there's no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential. What's important is that we take a strategic and sustainable approach to getting there."

Members of the public who know of potential sites are encouraged to check details against Lidl's site requirements and contact the supermarket's Property team with further details. More information can be found here: www.lidl.co.uk/about-us/property
