Is it a ghostly inmate, a trick of the light – or something much stranger?

A spine-tingling photo taken inside Shepton Mallet Prison has left people scratching their heads, after a visitor captured what appears to be a shadowy figure lurking in one of the jail's historic corridors.

The prison, which dates back to 1625 and once held infamous criminals including the Kray twins, is no stranger to eerie tales. It closed in 2013 but has become a hotspot for ghost hunters and thrill-seekers, drawn in by its chilling reputation.

Sightings of the so-called "White Lady" – a heartbroken spirit said to wander the wings in a flurry of cold air – are among the most reported paranormal encounters at the site. Others have claimed to hear ghostly whispers, experience sudden temperature drops, and even feel like they're being watched.

The latest image, shared online by a stunned visitor, shows a mysterious shape standing in the shadows – with no obvious explanation for what it could be. Some say it's a spirit caught mid-appearance. Others think it could be a camera glitch or a play of light.

But one thing's for sure – it's given people a proper fright.

Have you had a spooky experience at Shepton Mallet Prison? Let us know what you think the figure might be – if you dare.
