Ex-Shepton resident leaves legacy to preserve town’s history

Shepton Mallet Town Council has received a legacy donation from former resident Colin George Cumbleton, who wished to support the purchase, conservation, and display of historical artefacts related to the town.
Mr Cumbleton, who grew up in Shepton Mallet before studying at Cardiff University and working in Bristol, remained passionate about the town's history throughout his life.
His family described him as someone who collected memorabilia and artefacts linked to Shepton Mallet, and they are pleased that his gift will help preserve and showcase the town's heritage.
To honour his wishes, the council has set up a dedicated fund for historical projects. This could include:
- Expanding local museum collections
- Preserving historic photographs and documents
- Creating exhibitions or displays for the public
Discussions are also ongoing with Shepton Mallet Prison Museum, which has taken on local historical artefacts and aims to create a free public museum space.
The town council is now considering how best to use the fund to ensure Mr Cumbleton's legacy benefits future generations and will work with local history groups to develop plans.
Residents interested in donating to Shepton Mallet's historical preservation efforts are encouraged to contact the council to discuss options.
