Shepton fumes as pothole 'craters' keep coming back

Shepton Mallet Town Council is calling on Somerset Council to improve road repairs following widespread frustration over the state of the town's roads and the poor quality of recent pothole fixes.
Concerns have been raised after temporary repairs were carried out in wet conditions, leading to potholes reappearing within days. Residents and councillors have criticised the lack of quality control and long-term planning for road maintenance.
Recent government funding has allocated £45 million to Somerset specifically for pothole repairs.
The town council is demanding clarity on how this money will be spent and when Shepton Mallet can expect significant road improvements.
A formal letter will be sent to Somerset Council outlining the town's concerns, with a focus on:
- The poor standard of recent pothole repairs
- The lack of monitoring and accountability for contractors
- How the new pothole repair funding will be allocated
- The impact of poor road conditions on businesses and residents
The council also plans to keep residents informed about their efforts to push for improvements. Councillors urged Somerset Council to prioritise Shepton Mallet, given the high volume of traffic passing through the town and the increasing damage to vehicles.
