Crime figures for Shepton Mallet: violent crime remains high, but overall numbers drop

The latest crime statistics for Shepton Mallet show a slight drop in recorded incidents, with 109 crimes reported in December 2024, down from 114 the previous month.
However, violent crime continues to be the most common offence in the town, with 44 cases recorded last month.
According to police data, violent crime—which includes assault, domestic violence, and grievous bodily harm (GBH)—accounted for nearly half of all reported incidents. While this figure has fallen from 52 cases in November, it remains a major concern for officers.
Shoplifting also saw an increase, with 15 cases reported in December compared to seven in November. This category includes theft from retail stores and is often linked to organised crime groups or repeat offenders.
There were 13 reports of anti-social behaviour, covering incidents such as vandalism, public drunkenness, and verbal abuse. This was only slightly lower than November's figure of 14.
Burglary saw an increase, with six break-ins reported in December compared to three the previous month. This includes both home and business burglaries.
Criminal damage and arson, which includes vandalism, graffiti, and deliberate fires, saw a drop, with six cases in December compared to 10 in November.
Other theft, which covers offences such as bicycle theft and pickpocketing, was reported five times, down from eight in November.
Reports of public order offences, which include threatening behaviour and violent disorder, rose slightly from seven in November to eight in December.
Robbery, which involves stealing from someone using force or threats, increased from two cases in November to three in December.
Vehicle crime, which includes car theft and break-ins, was reported three times, up from one the previous month.
There were two reports of drug offences, which cover possession, supply, or production of illegal substances—up from one in November.
One incident of possession of weapons was recorded in December, down from four the previous month. This category includes carrying knives or other offensive weapons.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We have seen a slight reduction in overall crime in Shepton Mallet, but we are aware that violent crime and shoplifting remain issues of concern for the community. Our officers are continuing to work closely with local businesses and residents to tackle these offences and ensure the town remains a safe place.
"We encourage anyone with concerns or information to come forward. Reports can be made by calling 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers."
Police say they will continue to focus on tackling violent crime and theft in the town, particularly in retail areas where shoplifting has been on the rise.
