Christmas lights switch-on to light up Shepton Mallet this Friday
Shepton Mallet is preparing to welcome the festive season in style this Friday (29 November) with its annual Christmas lights switch-on and market. Running from 5pm to 8pm, the event promises a packed evening of entertainment, food, and family-friendly activities.
The lights will officially be switched on at 7pm, with a local child—winner of the town's Christmas Card Competition—given the honour of lighting up the town.
This year's event builds on the success of last year, with Shepton Mallet Town Council unveiling a brand-new Christmas tree and light display, described as "bigger and better than ever."
Alongside the switch-on, a bustling night market will offer craft, food, and drink stalls, with some High Street favourites staying open for late-night shopping. Families can enjoy free donkey petting, Santa's Grotto, and a range of children's workshops.
Live music will feature throughout the evening, with performances from Shepton Mallet Big Band, Frome Bandits, and the All Hallows Choir adding a festive soundtrack.
Workshops running during the event include:
- Wooden decoration making with Holly and Hawthorne at Shepton Library, creating pine cone and wooden tree ornaments.
- Music & Movement for under 5s with Willow from Sing-a-Ling, also at Shepton Library.
- Paper crafting with Josephine Dawn Monroe at Create@8, offering the chance to make unique gifts or decorations.
Hot food options will include hog roast, wood-fired pizza, and mulled cider, ensuring plenty of festive treats for visitors.
Free parking will be available at Great Ostry car park, making it easy for people to come along and enjoy the evening.
This year's Christmas lights switch-on is set to be a memorable start to the festive season, bringing the community together to celebrate.
