Carnival magic returns: Wells and Glastonbury await as Shepton Mallet amazes

By Laura Linham 16th Nov 2023

The carnival unfolded under clear skies in Shepton Mallet, as hundreds of spectators lined the streets for the annual display of light, colour, dance and sound.

The night sky shimmered with an eclectic mix of pirates, circus, dragons, and dinosaurs, as well as copious amounts of men in drag sitting on washing machines, all bringing a fantastical charm to the night.

As always, there was huge support for Shepton club Shambles CC, who had dedicated their cart to the memory of club secretary and member Angela Davis. Their casino-themed entry, "Place Your Bets"" received huge claps and whoops of support as it travelled the route.

Pentathlon CC clinched the top spot in the Tableau category with their Zulu - Battle of Rorke's Drift-themed entry.

Meanwhile, Ramblers CC emerged victorious in the feature cart segment with their Trawlermen cart.

The carnival procession is set to continue its journey, arriving in Wells on Friday night, and will conclude its 2023 tour in Glastonbury on Saturday.
