October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an important time to promote the benefits of early detection and the availability of screening services. Breast screening saves around 1,300 lives each year across the UK, and women in Shepton Mallet are being reminded of the life-saving importance of regular check-ups.

Early detection saves lives

When breast cancer is detected at an early stage, the survival rate is incredibly high—98% of women survive for five years or more after being diagnosed. Screening can pick up changes in breast tissue before symptoms appear, often before any visible or palpable signs develop, making early intervention possible.

Who is eligible for free screening?

In Shepton Mallet, all women aged 50-71 are automatically invited for free NHS breast screening every three years, with the first invitation arriving around a woman’s 53rd birthday. If you’ve missed a previous screening or haven’t booked an appointment after receiving an invitation, you can still contact your local NHS breast screening service to arrange one, regardless of how long it’s been.

Where to get screened in Shepton Mallet

For Shepton Mallet residents, breast screening services are available at nearby hospitals such as Yeovil District Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. Additionally, mobile screening units sometimes visit the area, providing even more convenient options for women to attend a screening without having to travel far.

Be breast aware

It’s not just about attending your screening appointments—getting to know how your breasts look and feel is equally important. Regular self-checks can help you spot changes such as new lumps, alterations in size or shape, changes in skin texture, nipple discharge, or persistent pain.

Even if you have just had a mammogram, continue checking your breasts each month to stay familiar with what’s normal for you. If you notice anything unusual, don’t wait—make an appointment to see your GP as soon as possible.

For more information on how to check your breasts and what to look out for, visit the NHS breast screening page.

Let’s use Breast Cancer Awareness Month as a reminder to take care of ourselves and encourage others to do the same. Book your screenings, share the information, and help spread the word that early detection can save lives.
