Barn destroyed in blaze near Shepton Mallet

A barn holding three tonnes of wood caught fire near Shepton Mallet on Tuesday this week.

At 8am the fire service was called by the barn's owner and neighbours with reports of a barn on fire in Pilton.

Crews from Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and Wells were sent to investigate and found the metal barn well alight.

They set to work fighting the fire and simultaneously protecting the nearby machinery with attack jets and with a thermal imaging camera to check for hotspots and fire spread.

A spokesperson explained: "Crews worked well, making good and steady progress to knock the fire out, remove the wood store and prevent the fire from spreading any further."

It took around an hour and a half to get the blaze under contol

Once the contents were removed, fire extinguisher and the scene made safe, duty of care was left with the farmer.

The barn sustained 70 per cent damage in the fire but there were no casualties.
