The knife found in Shepton Mallet

Avon and Somerset Police have urged residents to hand in any knives they find after one was discovered in Shepton Mallet.

The knife was found by gas workers in a small tree on the green by Queen's Road a few weeks ago, and following concerns raised by local residents, the police have confirmed their advice to anyone finding a bladed instrument.

The event has been postponed

The Shepton Mallet Inflatable 5K, which was due to be held at the Bath and West Showground tomorrow (August 10) has been postponed due to the predicted bad weather.

A Met Office weather warning has been issued for high winds of more than 45mph on Saturday meaning the organisers cannot operate the inflatable obstacles safely for participants, spectators, and event staff.

At a Shepton Mallet Town Council meeting on Tuesday 6th August, attended by more than 60 members of the public, councillors agreed unanimously to make an annual grant of £15,000 for a five-year period, to contribute towards the development of a community hub by keeping the town's library in its existing building.

Following a review of library services by Somerset County Council in 2017, and a proposal to move the town centre library into the Mendip District Council complex, stakeholders and town councillors, led by the Friends of Shepton Mallet Library, have been campaigning to retain the library in the centre of town.
