Shepton Mallet hosted Horndean FC, a formidable opponent from the Isthmian League South Central Division, in what was anticipated to be a challenging match.

Despite being short of several key players, Shepton Mallet rose to the occasion, delivering a spirited performance to clinch a 1-0 victory and advance to the next round.

The only goal of the match came in the 17th minute, when the industrious Fin Haines set up Charlie Bateson, who expertly found the net from a tight angle. Haines and Matt Morris continued to trouble the Horndean goalkeeper with some strong efforts, showcasing Shepton's attacking intent.

Horndean nearly levelled the score just before halftime, but a well-placed header from Kelvin Robinson was brilliantly saved by Shepton's goalkeeper, Tom Easterbrook, keeping the hosts in the lead as they headed into the break.

Shepton Mallet began the second half with renewed energy, with Haines and Ethan Witchell combining well to set up Bateson for another attempt, only for Horndean's keeper, Thomas, to deny him. The visitors responded with increased pressure, and they came close to equalising on the hour mark, but Will Banks was on hand to clear a shot off the line after it had beaten Easterbrook.

The most spectacular moment of the match came from Shepton's Jacob Sloggett, who unleashed a thunderous 25-yard shot that narrowly missed the target. Despite Horndean's relentless pursuit of an equaliser, Shepton Mallet's defence held firm, ensuring they emerged victorious.

The win was a testament to Shepton Mallet's determination and resilience, much to the delight of the 264 fans in attendance. Danny Constable was named Man of the Match, sponsored by Sally Robertson & South West Schoolwear, for his outstanding contribution to the team's success.

Looking ahead, Shepton Mallet will play their first away match of the season against Saltash United on Saturday, 10th August. They will then return home to face local rivals Paulton Rovers on Tuesday, 13th August, with a large crowd expected.

The club is also on the lookout for new sponsors. Anyone interested in supporting Shepton Mallet AFC is encouraged to speak with a committee member, who will be happy to discuss sponsorship opportunities.
