Mendip district councillor Barry O'Leary has welcome moves to ensure that those villagers most affected by last year's NASS festival get heard and listened to when it come to addressing the problems.

Last week residents of Southwood, Evercreech and Prestleigh will have received notice of the local consultation by NASS - only to find it was being held a 14-mile round trip away in North Wootton.

The planning application to expand Bristol Airport, the nearest major airport to Shepton Mallet, was rejected by North Somerset Council yesterday (February 10).

At the opening of the debate at the special Planning and Regulatory committee meeting, Cllr Steve Hogg (Wrington) proposed a motion calling on members to refuse the application.

Somerset Wildlife Trust has successfully completed its year-long Making Space for Butterflies in Mendip project with Aggregate Industries (AI), which worked to improve butterfly habitat and food sources in the Mendip Hills area near Shepton Mallet.

Thanks to a £22,000 grant from The Wildlife Trusts and AI's Local Partnerships Fund, a range of grassland and woodland habitat restoration work, including woodland ride management, thinning, coppicing, hedgelaying, scrub clearance and fencing works, has been carried out at wildflower grasslands around AI's Torr Works Quarry at East Cranmore.
