By Laura Linham
29th Oct 2023 | Local News
As winter approaches, residents of Shepton Mallet are encouraged to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccines, especially those more vulnerable to severe illness.
Who should get vaccinated?
The NHS is offering both flu and COVID-19 vaccines to individuals who:
- Are 65 or older (or will turn 65 by 31 March 2024)
- Have specific health conditions or learning disabilities
- Are pregnant
- Live with someone with a weakened immune system
- Are carers
- Work in frontline health or social care
- Live in a care home
Children aged 2 or 3 as of 31 August 2023, as well as school-aged children from Reception to Year 11, are also eligible for the children's flu vaccine if they have certain health conditions.
How to get your jab
If you qualify for an NHS flu jab, you can do the following:
- Arrange an appointment with your GP
- Find a local pharmacy offering NHS flu jabs (if you're 18 and over)
- Book online or through the NHS App (if you're 18 and over)
For the COVID-19 vaccine, you can either book an appointment online or avail of walk-in options. Anyone aged 12 and up can book without waiting for an invitation.
Tips for staying warm and well
The cold weather can be especially tough on vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with long-term health issues. Experts recommend keeping the temperature in frequently used rooms at 18°C or above. Various grants, benefits, and advice are available to help you make your home more energy-efficient and manage heating expenses.
When to consult healthcare professionals
If you belong to a high-risk group and start feeling unwell, seek medical advice as soon as possible. Pharmacists, GPs, and NHS 111 are available for guidance on minor ailments and urgent medical matters.
Looking out for each other
The community is urged to check on neighbours and family members who might be vulnerable. Make sure they have enough food, prescription medicines, and offer to assist if icy conditions make it hard for them to leave their homes.
