Shoplifting has surged 22% this year across the UK, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

However, Somerset has managed to dodge the worst of this crime wave, ranking 158th among local authorities in the UK for shoplifting incidents. For context, Somerset's neighbouring local authorities of Bath and North East Somerset and North Somerset ranked 118th and 189th, respectively.

While Westminster tops the list as the shoplifting capital of the UK with 16.64 incidents per 1,000 people, Somerset reported only 4.17 shoplifting crimes per 1,000 residents per annum. This is significantly lower than the national average, making it one of the safer areas for shop owners.

Money.co.uk shop insurance experts delved into crime data for England & Wales and offered their findings in a comprehensive report.

Cameron Jaques, a business insurance expert at money.co.uk, commented on the findings: "The cost of living crisis is affecting us all. With the cost of food and basic necessities continuing to rise, it's not surprising that shoplifting is on the rise as well, as large segments of UK's population struggle to afford essential everyday items."

Despite the reassuring numbers for Somerset, experts are cautioning shop owners to not let their guard down.

Money.co.uk offers several tips on how to protect your retail establishment:

Expert Tips on Preventing Shoplifting

  1. Employee Training: Train your staff to identify suspicious behaviour and approach customers with a friendly greeting.
  2. Maintain Records: Keep detailed inventory records, including photographs and receipts, for insurance purposes.
  3. Assess Coverage Needs: Before selecting an insurance policy, evaluate your store's specific risk factors.
  4. Compare Insurance Quotes: Obtain quotes from multiple insurers to find the most cost-effective policy.
  5. Visible Staff Presence: Keep staff visible throughout the store to discourage shoplifting.
  6. Use Mirrors and Cameras: Install these to eliminate blind spots in the store layout.
  7. Organised Store Layout: A clutter-free store allows better visibility and makes it harder for shoplifters to operate.
  8. Limited Access to High-Value Items: Place these items in locked display cases or near the checkout.
  9. Use EAS Systems: Attach security tags to merchandise, which trigger alarms if tampered with.
  10. Bag Checks and Receipt Verification: Implement a bag check policy and ask customers to show their receipts upon exit.
  11. Engage with Customers: A friendly and attentive staff can make potential shoplifters uncomfortable.
  12. Collaborate with Local Law Enforcement: Report thefts promptly and establish a good relationship with local police.
  13. Educate Your Customers: Use signage and announcements to make customers aware of shoplifting policies and penalties.

So while Somerset might be a safer place for shopkeepers, it pays to stay vigilant and take preventive measures to keep it that way.
