What’s next for Shepton Mallet Prison after its future is secured?

Shepton Mallet Prison is set for a new era of restoration and development following its recent acquisition by Cove Group, ending years of uncertainty over the historic site's future.
Having officially completed the purchase, Cove Group is now preparing to unveil long-term plans to enhance the former prison as a heritage attraction, ensuring it not only remains open to the public but also evolves into a more immersive and engaging experience for visitors.

Investment in restoration and preservation
One of the immediate priorities for Cove Group will be essential restoration work to protect the site's historical integrity. The prison, which dates back to the 17th century and once held some of Britain's most infamous criminals, has suffered from years of limited investment. Now, with full ownership, Cove Group will have the freedom to carry out structural improvements and maintenance, ensuring the building is safeguarded for generations to come.

A richer visitor experience
Alongside preservation efforts, plans are in place to expand the range of events and attractions offered at the prison. Previously, the site has hosted guided tours, ghost hunts, and immersive experiences, but Cove Group intends to deepen public engagement through new and enhanced programming.
Joel Campbell, CEO of Cove Group, said: "Shepton Mallet Prison is an irreplaceable piece of British history, and now, under Cove Group, we can finally give it the investment and care it deserves. Our team has done an incredible job keeping it running under difficult circumstances, and now we begin the work to develop it into an even greater attraction for visitors, historians, and future generations."
This could mean a wider variety of themed events, interactive exhibits, and historical reenactments, allowing visitors to experience the prison's history in new ways.

Expanding educational opportunities
Another key focus will be on education and historical interpretation. Shepton Mallet Prison has long been a destination for schools, universities, and researchers, and Cove Group aims to broaden its educational outreach.
Plans could include:
- New learning resources for schools and colleges
- Expanded guided tours with in-depth historical narratives
- Collaborations with historians and heritage organisations

The beginning of a new chapter
While details of the full development plan are yet to be announced, Cove Group has assured that this is just the beginning of a major transformation for Shepton Mallet Prison.
Joel Campbell added: "Now, the work begins on an exciting new chapter for Shepton Mallet Prison, and I couldn't be more excited about what's ahead."
For visitors and locals alike, this means a revitalised landmark that will not only preserve its past but also offer new and exciting ways to explore its history. More details on the restoration and future plans are expected to be released in the coming months.
