It's another busy weekend in Shepton Mallet as the town swings into winter mode. From live music to Victorian-themed markets and forest planting, there's plenty to do - here's just some of the events that caught our eye.

Organ Concert with Matthew Walters

This evening of organ music from the talented organist and composer Matthew Walters playing Downside Abbey's magnificent Compton organ will feature music by a wide variety of composers including Bach, Buxtehude, Hans Zimmer, Mendelssohn, Handel and other well-known composers.

The Food Forest Project planting day

A food forest is being planted at Wilfswood in Evercreech. It is the latest site for The Food Forest Project – a community food initiative which uses pockets of disused land to produce, free, fresh, organic food for the local community, and at the same time encourage people to reconnect with nature.

On November 26, The Food Forest Project will be working with the Wilfswood team to plant the first three layers of a two acre food forest. There are many trees, shrubs and bushes to plant, and they are hoping that people will come along to help There will be refreshments, as well as activities for children.

The planting will take place at Wilfswood, Leighton Lane, Evercreech, BA4 6OP between 10am and 3pm. Read more about The Food Forest Project HERE

Join in the fun at Shepton Mallet Victorian Fayre

The ever-popular 'Victorian Fayre' is the last market of the year and takes place on November 27, with live music from some fabulous local artists in the Market Place to entertain you while you browse and maybe do some Christmas shopping. There will also be a free Victorian Fancy Dress Competition with prizes for the best outfit (Adults and Children under 12 years old)

Lots of stalls selling handmade crafts, plants, Christmas wreaths, cakes, mulled cider, street food and more. With shops and cafes open in town there will be plenty for everyone to enjoy.

Shepton Mallet Lantern Festival Workshops

Shepton Mallet Lantern Festival is a fabulous, illuminated parade in Shepton Mallet with spectacular hand-made paper lanterns.

Two workshops are taking place this weekend, so you can join in the fun and create your own lantern.

The workshops are safe family environments with lots of help available from our experienced volunteers. They are on hand to support you though planning and creating your own willow and tissue paper lanterns; all ages and abilities are welcome, but under 16s must be supervised. £2 for basic materials kit; children's entertainment packs available for free. Remember to bring snacks - unleashing your imagination is hungry work!

The workshops will take place at the Paul St Community Centre, Shepton Mallet on Saturday and Sunday, November 26th/27th from 10am to 4pm. The parade itself will take place on the evening of Saturday 17th December. It starts at 5 pm from the bandstand in Collett Park in Shepton Mallet,

And a quick note for anyone looking to get a youngster behind the wheel of a car soon - Young Drive is coming to the Bath & West Showground at the beginning of December.

Youngsters get to drive a Vauxhall Corsa or similar vehicle, with a fully-trained driving instructor on a specially laid-out course, complete with junctions, traffic lights, manoeuvring zones and more. The realistic road layout even includes viewing areas for parents and families, so you can watch proudly on as they take their first steps on their journey to learning to drive – and all before they're 17!

No licence needed. As long as they're aged between 10 and 17 years, they can have fun and learn new skills at a Young Driver lesson!
