As the 5th of November approaches, Shepton Mallet is buzzing with anticipation for Bonfire Night, a quintessentially British tradition that celebrates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605 with bonfires and fireworks.

While it's a night of fun and festivities, it's crucial for residents to understand the various rules and regulations governing the safe and legal use of fireworks.

Shepton Mallet Bonfire Night Firework display

The Shepton Mallet Rotary Club Fireworks will take place on Saturday 4th November at West Shepton Playing Fields, Old Wells Road, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5XN. Gates will open at 6.15 pm, and the bonfire will be lit at 7 pm. Ticket prices are £5/6 for adults, £3/4 for children aged 5-15, and entry is free for children under 4. Family tickets are available for £15/18. The event will feature food and a bar, and attendees are reminded that no sparklers or fireworks can be brought into the event.

Transportation of Fireworks

Zego Insurance points out that residents should be cautious when transporting fireworks. No special vehicle is needed for personal use, but large quantities may require a Vehicle Special Order (VSO) and adhere to hazardous material regulations.

Buying and Using Fireworks

If you're planning on hosting your own firework display, remember that you must be over 18 to purchase fireworks and that the use of fireworks extends until midnight on Bonfire Night. Be mindful of noise levels and animal welfare when setting them off.

Bonfire Regulations

Be aware of designated Smoke Control Areas, rental or leasehold agreements clauses, and road proximity when lighting a bonfire. Fines and even imprisonment could result from failing to adhere to these regulations.

A spokesperson from Zego Insurance said, "Bonfire Night is a spectacular celebration that comes with its share of rules and responsibilities. By adhering to the regulations on the purchase, transport, and use of fireworks, you can ensure that the only sparks flying are those lighting up the night sky."

As you plan your Bonfire Night, whether you're attending the local Shepton Mallet Rotary Club event or hosting your own backyard display, remember to stay safe and follow the rules for a memorable night.
