Shepton Mallet Prison, one of the oldest and most historic prisons in the world, has been saved from potential closure after being purchased by Cove Group from the Ministry of Justice.

This significant acquisition ensures that the 400-year-old site will remain open as a heritage attraction and will not be converted into residential housing.

So, what does this mean for the future of Shepton Mallet Prison and the local community?

Securing the Future of a Somerset Icon

Cove Group, which has managed Shepton Mallet Prison as a tourist attraction since 2017, has long been dedicated to preserving the site's rich history. The group's CEO, Joel Campbell, described the acquisition as "the biggest step forward in our 10-year relationship with Shepton Mallet Prison." This deal not only safeguards the prison's future but also protects it from redevelopment into housing, ensuring that its historical and cultural significance is preserved for generations to come.

Campbell, who first attempted to purchase the prison in 2014, highlighted the group's commitment: "Our dedication has never wavered. Now, after months of intense negotiations, we have secured the future of Shepton Mallet Prison, preserving its historical significance and securing jobs for its dedicated staff."

Investment and Development Plans

With the acquisition now finalised, Cove Group is preparing to invest heavily in the site. Years of limited investment due to restrictive lease terms have left the prison in need of significant upgrades. According to attractions manager Charlie Lawson, one of the first priorities is to restore heating to the building, which has been off since 2014.

"This acquisition is not just about preserving history; it's about celebrating and revitalising it," said Campbell. The group's plans include extensive restoration work to enhance the prison's appeal as a heritage destination, ensuring it continues to attract visitors from across the UK and beyond.

Economic Impact for Shepton Mallet

The purchase of Shepton Mallet Prison by Cove Group is also good news for the local economy. The continued operation of the prison as a tourist attraction secures 18 staff jobs and is expected to bring a boost to local businesses as visitor numbers increase. With significant investment on the horizon, the site is set to become an even more prominent feature of Somerset's tourism landscape.

A Bright Future Ahead

Cove Group's success with other heritage sites, such as Shrewsbury Prison, suggests that Shepton Mallet Prison is in good hands. The company's plans to transform the site into a world-class tourist attraction promise to elevate it even further, offering visitors a unique and engaging historical experience.

As Shepton Mallet Prison enters this new chapter, the future looks bright. The site will remain a key part of Somerset's rich history, offering a glimpse into the past while contributing to the local economy and preserving jobs.

For the residents of Shepton Mallet and the wider community, this means that one of the area's most iconic landmarks will not only be preserved but revitalised, ensuring its place as a beacon of heritage tourism for years to come.

Stay tuned for more updates as Cove Group's plans for Shepton Mallet Prison unfold, promising an exciting future for this historic site.
