A Mendip councillor is working hard to encourage Evercreech villagers to Give Back Christmas again this year.

It follows a successful debut of a foodbank drop off at the Community Christmas Tree in Evercreech.

The special socially distant drop off will see weather-proof empty gifting boxes placed for filling under the Community Christmas Tree, which is opposite St Peter's Church.

The pop-up will be available for locals to drop off some Christmas basics for those in need tomorrow (December 12) from noon until 6pm.

"Its very easy, just look for the special white weatherproof boxes," said Councillor O'Leary.

"Having spoken to lots of people about the village I thought would be good to have some boxes out on Saturday at the foot of our Community Christmas Tree.

"The idea is to make what I like to call Give Back Christmas as easy as possible, and as this is our second year we want this to be a part of what you do every Christmas."

It is hoped when people come to see the Community Christmas Tree or take a family selfie they can bring something as a community gift to Give Back Christmas for those who may not have quite so much this year.

Barry said: "It's a facility that seems sadly needed more than ever, especially this year.

"I've spoken to those at St Peter's involved with the foodbank as well as people all around the community, and it would be a great way to be part of the festive season.

"Of course, local foodbanks need support all year round, in fact we need to think about being proactive and work to eliminate the reasons why so many depend on these banks, but until more progress is made we can each do a little, it does help a lot."

The advice given is donations must have a long sell by date and be non-perishable. The local foodbank helps people not just in Mendip towns like Shepton but in communities nearby like Evercreech and Lamyatt, as well as further away like Baltonsborough and Butleigh.
