The terrors inside Shepton Mallet prison's old workshop

A wing of Shepton Mallet prison has been taken over by zombies.
And some pirates. And this Easter, a not-so-lovely fluffy Easter bunny will be roaming around terrorising visitors too.
They're all players in the immersive entertainments that are being run every week in the prison's former workshop wing. And while it might seem like an eclecticmix of characters, that's what makes the experience so different.
"We want to make Shepton Mallet the home of immersive entertainment in the UK," says Greg Rudman, MD of Immersive Events, which run the experiences. "We currently have three different experiences, on three different floors, and I don't think there's anything quite like this out there at the moment."
Guests at The Workshop take part in three different adventures – Zombie Town, where the mission is to evade the flesh-eating zombies; Turf Wars – a next-level escape room-style experience, set across several rooms, where the aim is to solve puzzles without being captured by the hunter; and Locked in a Box, where you hide in a crate on a journey to haunted shores, watching the horrors of the pirate universe unfold around you.
"We try to tick a number of different boxes for different guests," says Greg. "There's the chance to go off and be a hero, but there's also more puzzle-based bits too. It has been designed so everyone can contribute."
And if it all sounds a bit, well, terrifying, Greg says they've got that covered too. "Some guests are extremely scared," he admits. "But as actors it's our job to try to manage that and get them through it. Some of my most rewarding experiences doing this have been helping people to push themselves to do things that they didn't think they could do. And they are always happy that they managed it in the end.
"When I see guests take part and they are pretending to be pirates, they are cheering on the heroes and booing the villains, that's what it's all about. We have got them. They have left the real world. They are there on the deck of a pirate ship."
The Workshop is open every weekend for the Turf Wars experience, and Greg also has several events planned throughout the year. There's the Easter Terror event which runs on April 8, 9 and 10 and Zombie nights with live music. Greg is also planning activity days for young people during the summer where they can spend time with the actors and learn about immersive theatre and, of course, he plans to go all out for Halloween, hopefully adding some new attractions.
"We feel we have got something really different here," says Greg. "We just want people to come and leave the real world behind."
