St John Ambulance seeks volunteers for Shepton Mallet’s Badger group
By Joshua Gill 9th Oct 2026
St John Ambulance is appealing for volunteers to help run its Badger group in Shepton Mallet, giving children the chance to learn first aid and develop new skills.
The charity needs Youth Leaders and Youth Helpers to support activities for children aged five to ten at weekly meetings.
Previous experience of working with young people is not essential. Full training and ongoing support will be provided, with roles designed to fit around volunteers' existing commitments.
Helpers will deliver activities, support friendships and encourage children to build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills.
The Shepton vacancies form part of a wider recruitment appeal across Bristol, Avon and Somerset, where volunteers are also needed for Badger and Cadet groups.
Kathryn Doul, County Youth Lead, said: "Being a Youth Leader or Helper is an incredible opportunity to help develop our Cadets and Badgers not just in First Aid but teamwork and Leadership. Building confidence and self-esteem, giving young people a voice and to make choices. We are able to guide youngsters towards their goals of become health care professionals by giving them opportunities to train and work at events alongside Paramedics, Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists and Occupational therapists."
Alongside supporting young people, volunteers can gain skills and experience themselves and meet others involved in the charity's work.
St John Ambulance's youth programmes cater for Badgers aged five to ten and Cadets aged 11 to 17. The current appeal in Shepton Mallet is specifically for volunteers supporting Badgers.
Kathryn added: "Training in Leadership, being a Demonstrator and completing their DofE with St John stands children out from the crowd when applying for University, apprenticeships and careers.
"This is all thanks to the work of our incredible Youth Team Volunteers!"
Anyone interested in becoming a Youth Leader or Youth Helper can find out more and apply through St John Ambulance's volunteer recruitment website.
