SEND supper welcomes noise, stimming and tablets
By Laura Linham 5th Nov 2026
For many families, going out for dinner can mean planning around unfamiliar food, noise and the worry of being judged if a child needs to move, make noise or leave the table. The Loft in Street is inviting families to put some of that pressure aside at its next SEND supper on Tuesday, 17 November.
The evening is reserved for families of children with special educational needs and disabilities. There will be a quiet area and soft play, and food can be pre-ordered so children do not have to wait for a familiar meal.
Children are welcome to bring tablets, headphones and other sensory items. The idea is simple: families can settle in, eat together and let children take part in whatever way works for them.
Owner Mark Tobin said: "We know that for many families with SEN children, eating out just isn't an option — whether it's fear of judgment, meltdowns over unfamiliar food, or the pressure of sitting still. This evening is different. It's just SEND families. Tablets are fine. Stimming is welcome. Noise is OK. And nobody has to apologise for being themselves."
One parent described the supper as "an absolutely amazing chance for us parents/family to enjoy an amazing meal filled with a room of adults, all in similar boats, just trying to stay afloat."
She added: "We've found it a lifeline, a chance to feel like a 'normal' family, able to go out and enjoy a yummy meal."
Families do not have to know in advance exactly how their child will manage the evening. They can play, use a tablet, take a break or return to the table when they are ready.
The supper takes place on Tuesday, 17 November. To book or ask about timings, menus and your family's needs, email Mark at [email protected].
