Somerset's new High Sheriff sworn in at Wells Cathedral with focus on youth support

Janet Montgomery has been officially appointed as High Sheriff of Somerset for 2025/26, following a declaration ceremony at Wells Cathedral on 23 March.
The historic, non-political role sees the High Sheriff act as the King's representative in the county on matters of law and order for a one-year term.
Speaking after the ceremony, Janet said: "I am honoured to take on the role of High Sheriff for Somerset and join the distinguished list of those who have served before me.
"During my term, I am committed to supporting the judiciary, law enforcement, and voluntary and charitable organisations in Somerset, with a particular focus on supporting young people through mentoring and development initiatives."
Born and bred in Somerset, Janet is a qualified chartered surveyor and town planner, with most of her career spent as a partner in a West Country firm of architects and surveyors, where she continues to consult. Alongside her professional work, she has also acted as a trustee for several Somerset charities with a focus on health, sport and education, and has served as a school governor at both primary and secondary level.
Her work in education has shaped her understanding of the challenges facing young people, and she plans to use her year in office to champion charities and organisations that:
- Create opportunities to build self-confidence and personal skills in children and young people
- Provide individual mentoring to help young people discover their interests and passions
- Help prevent vulnerable children from becoming involved in risk-taking behaviour or exploitation through education and support
"While my primary focus will be on organisations supporting children and young people," Janet added, "I recognise the incredible work being done across Somerset in many areas. I look forward to connecting with a wide range of charities and community groups throughout the county over the coming year, learning more about their activities, and exploring ways to support their invaluable efforts."
