Shepton Mallet gas works to bring traffic disruption in March
By Laura Linham 30th Jan 2026
Essential gas works will return to Shepton Mallet next month as Wales & West Utilities begins the final phase of a major upgrade project on Whitstone Road.
Work will take place between Sunday, 9 March, and Wednesday, 20 March, with a one-way traffic system in place and diversions agreed by Somerset Council. The scheme follows earlier phases completed last year and aims to future-proof the gas network for both current use and green gas transition.
Simon Lee, who is managing the roadworks for Wales & West, said: "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.
"Whether it's heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it."
The company says the project will help ensure long-term reliability and allow the network to carry cleaner energy as the UK transitions to net zero. Motorists are being advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.
