Somerset Council has marked International Volunteer Day 2025 by recognising the contribution of more than 1,400 volunteers supporting 20 local services across the county.

Volunteers play key roles in delivering public services — from library helpers and youth mentors to countryside rangers, drivers and visitor centre guides. The council praised their commitment under this year's global theme "Every Contribution Matters".

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, Lead Member for Communities, said: "We are so grateful for them giving up their time to benefit others. Every hour volunteered makes a real difference, not just to the services we provide, but to the lives of people across Somerset."

Volunteer roles currently include assisting at Ham Hill Visitor Centre, ushering at weddings, helping with events at Westlands and the Octagon, driving residents to health appointments, and supporting young people through Route1 Advocacy and Duke of Edinburgh programmes.

All volunteers receive training and ongoing support. The council is encouraging new volunteers to come forward, with flexible roles available across Somerset.
