Time is running out for Somerset residents to share their views on potential changes to the Council Tax Reduction (CTR) scheme, with the consultation closing on 1 October.

The scheme provides financial support to working-age adults on low incomes, helping to reduce their Council Tax bills. Proposed changes would only affect those of working age, with pensioners continuing to receive the same level of support.

Somerset Council declared a financial emergency in November 2023 due to rising costs of key services. This prompted a series of measures aimed at reducing spending, including the public consultation on possible changes to the CTR scheme.

Cllr Bill Revans, Leader of Somerset Council, explained: "We fully recognise and appreciate the value of Council Tax Reduction to those on low incomes – in fact, one of our first decisions as a unitary council was to harmonise this support across the county.

"However, the national model of funding local government is broken. The costs of providing key demand-led services have risen sharply, and we have limited ways to raise income.

"Without national intervention, we have no choice but to consider all available options to reduce spending. We will not do this lightly, and it's important that people understand the changes being proposed and have their say before decisions are made."

Residents can share their feedback through the council's consultation webpage. Paper copies are available in libraries, and letters have been sent to those currently receiving CTR support. The results of the consultation will be published, with any changes set to take effect from 1 April 2025.
