Shepton’s Thatched Cottage could shed part of its thatched roof

Shepton's Thatched Cottage Inn could become a little less thatched under plans to replace part of its roof with tiles. Greene King wants to remove the thatch covering modern extensions at the Charlton Road pub and replace it with clay and slate.
The historic main building's thatched roof falls outside the proposed work. The applications concern the later additions to a property whose origins stretch back almost four centuries.
Somerset Council is considering applications for planning permission and listed building consent. Both describe replacing combed wheat reed thatch on the modern extensions with the alternative roofing materials.
The building at 63–65 Charlton Road dates from around 1650, according to Historic England. Originally a house, it was given Grade II-listed status in May 1952.
Residents can examine the proposals and comment through Somerset Council's planning website. The references are 2026/1890/FUL and 2026/1891/LBC.
